NML Quicklinks Changed

Do you use the QuickLinks menu on Norris Library’s homepage to get to your favorite resources? The menu has been revised to help you navigate the website more easily and, while many of the same items are still included, new ones have been added.

You will find it much quicker to get to AccessMedicine and AccessPharmacy as well as the popular mobile devices guide. The resources that were removed are available from other places on the website and can be searched in the homepage search box. Remember to use the specialized links for clinicians, students and researchers, also on the homepage.

Laptop Security Locks Available at Norris Library

Worried about leaving your laptop unattended while you’re in the library? Lock anchors have been installed on study tables and carrels throughout the building and cable locks are now available for check out to provide a more secure environment for you. Check the information page for the laptop security cable policy and more details.

Reserve Group Study Rooms on the Go!

Study room reservations are now self-service! Norris Library is pleased to announce the launch of an electronic reservation system for the library’s group study rooms. Now you can tell at a glance which rooms are reserved and those that are still available. Access to the reservation calendar is available from your desktop computer or from your mobile device using the reservation module included in Norris Library’s new mobile app.

To download the app on your mobile device, search “usc health sciences libraries” at the Android Market or the Apple App Store. Just point your web browser to http://uschsl.boopsie.com/m to make a reservation using other mobile devices (Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, etc).

Be sure to check the group room information page to learn about the library’s policies for their use.

Medmail + USCmail

If you work on the Health Sciences Campus, you may have been assigned a Medmail email account and calendar. However, if you’ve also been assigned a USC computer account, it can be confusing to know which account does what, and why you need to have both.

It is important to maintain your USC account and password because it identifies you and grants you off-campus access to Norris Library resources such as UpToDate, Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed@USC and also to the thousands of online books, journals and databases licensed by the University. In addition to library resources, a number of other systems also rely on the USC password. For added security, remember to reset your USC account password every 6 months or you may find that you’ve been locked out and denied access.

The Medmail email account is provided and managed by USC’s Health Sciences Information Technology. If you tend to use Medmail exclusively, Health Sciences IT suggests a best practice of forwarding your USC Account to your Medmail so that you will continue to be alerted to important USC email messages. Instructions for setting up forwarding from your USC e-mail to the MED Exchange server are posted on the USC Information Technology Services website.

Pivot Connects Funding and Research Expertise

Pivot is a powerful new tool that combines funding and collaboration opportunities for researchers and graduate students. Formerly separate Community of Science (COS) databases, (COS Funding Opportunities, COS Expertise and COS Scholar Universe), Pivot is pre-populated with USC researcher profiles (and others) and matches them to current funding opportunities in the COS database. This allows users to search for a funding opportunity and instantly view matching faculty from inside or outside USC. Searching by name will link to matching funding opportunities. Pivot provides global and local connections to strengthen research by helping faculty, staff researchers, and graduate students

Cookie Baking Book Added to NML Humanities Collection

Chewy Gooey Crispy Crunchy Melt-in-Your-Mouth Cookies by Alice Medrich was recently donated to the Norris Library Humanities collection (TX 772 M492c 2010) by the USC Health Sciences Libraries in memory of Lisa Kofman, an extraordinary colleague, friend and baker.

New PubMed Health Website Available

The National Library of Medicine and the National Center for Biotechnology Information have released the new and improved PubMed Health. Focusing on reviews of clinical effectiveness research, [the database] provides easy-to-read summaries for consumers, as well as full technical reports.

PubMed Health is based on systematic reviews of clinical trials, showing what treatments and prevention methods have been proven to work, and what remains unknown. The PubMed Health database has been built in partnership with the US’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), and The Cochrane Collaboration, among others.¹ The re-designed homepage includes four key sections:

•   Contents: a complete alphabetical listing of all titles, sorted by type of content.
•   Behind Headlines: the NHS guide to the science behind health stories in the news.
•   New & updated: content added in the last 60 days.
•   Featured reviews: high quality reviews on interesting topics are selected and featured here. “Previously featured reviews” are provided in an RSS feed to which people can subscribe.
•   Understanding clinical effectiveness: an explanation of clinical effectiveness research along with a section focusing on resources to help people understand systematic reviews and interpret the results.²

Google Scholar Citations

Have you heard about Google Scholar Citations? It “… provides a simple way for authors to keep track of citations to their articles.
