UpToDate Introduces Graphics Search

Searching for images to use in your paper or Powerpoint presentation? UpToDate’s new graphics search feature is the latest addition to Norris Library’s Images subject guide. Use the graphics search for quick access to over 23,000 authoritative graphics, including: pictures, tables, figures (illustrations and diagrams), graphs, algorithms and movies. All UpToDate graphics can be exported, printed and emailed.

To locate graphics, select “Graphics” in the search box or on the left hand navigation.

Search results are returned in easily viewed thumbnail format.

UpToDate topics that reference the graphic are included in the search results.

NLM Mobile App Guide

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has released a mobile app that is intended to serve as the authoritative guide to NLM mobile resources. Information on all NLM mobile resources are available through this app. To explore the app on a mobile device, visit http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mobile-app/.

Users can find NLM Mobile resources by:

Type: Web site or Application
Device: Android, Apple iOS, or Blackberry
Tags: Descriptive tags

Each mobile resource is represented by an entry which includes:

Brief description
Descriptive tag(s)
Image
Link to install App or launch Web site

The index of NLM mobile resources is available for offline browsing. Users can save the app to their device’s home screen for those times when they have no wireless connection or cell signal. The app is automatically updated with the latest information when the device is later connected to the Internet.

Thieme Medical Textbooks Available Online

Norris Medical Library subscribes to the Thieme E-Book Library, giving you access to 69 illustrated full-color medical textbooks and color atlases. Our licensing includes unlimited downloads of full books to your iPad or PC for use off-line.

Using the free iPublishCentral Reader app available in the iTunes store, users can download and read all titles available within the Thieme E-Book Library.

The app provides access to the books while preserving the original design and layout of the printed titles and enables users to bookmark ages for future reference and add notes as well as zoom into illustrations and artwork for closer study of details.

USC Information and Technology Consulting Service at Norris Library

Need to collect data for an up-coming summer project? The Norris Medical Library (NML) has good news for you! Dr. Brenda Osuna, Senior Statistical Consultant at the ITS Customer Support Center is available for consultation, biweekly, on Mondays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The free consultation service is intended to cover SAS, JMP and SPSS software, including software installation, configuration and usage as well as statistical computing issues related to experimental design, survey design, and data analysis and interpretation.

Requests for appointments with Dr. Osuna must be scheduled via an online form.

NLM Launches Web Content Collecting Initiative

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has launched a Web content collecting initiative. The Library is selecting Web content as part of its mission to collect, preserve, and make accessible the scholarly biomedical literature, as well as resources that illustrate a diversity of philosophical and cultural perspectives not found in the technical literature. New forms of publication on the Web, such as blogs authored by doctors and patients, illuminate health care thought and practice in the 21st century. In launching this initiative, the Library is capturing and providing a unique resource for future scholarship.

The Library’s inaugural collection of Web content is “Health and Medicine Blogs,” presenting the perspectives of physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and other individuals in health care fields. The collection also includes patients chronicling their experiences with conditions such as cancer, diabetes and arthritis. The site currently contains 12 blogs, including KevinMD.com, “social media’s leading physician voice;” Not Running a Hospital, a blog by a former CEO of a large Boston hospital; e-patient Dave, a cancer survivor and leader in the participatory medicine movement; and Wheelchair Kamikaze, who writes about his personal experience living with multiple sclerosis (MS).*

Shakespeare in the Library

Feeling melancholy? Know someone who’s a little hot-tempered? Did you know that the tradition that gave us these descriptions was also the foundation of medical practice?

A new exhibit in the Norris Library foyer explores this ancient and fascinating history and its influence on modern culture and literature. “Shakespeare & the Four Humors” illustrates pre-modern humoral medicine and examples of this early medical tradition in Shakespeare’s works. Originally inspired by the National Library of Medicine’s exhibit “…And that’s the humor of it,” the exhibit showcases some of the library’s oldest and rarest works, including Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum and botanical plates from as far back as 1492.

The exhibit also explores how the humoral tradition has persisted in varying forms in non-Western medical traditions. A bibliography included in the first case suggests further reading on the topic available at Norris Medical Library.

These questions have been psychometrically analyzed for relevance and appropriate degree of difficulty using actual student performance.
