Free Apps Available from the National Library of Medicine

Did you know that the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has created free apps (for iPad, iPod and others) in addition to PubMed and other familiar databases? To date, six apps, covering a variety of topics, have been released and are available for free download:

Embryo” provides access to a collection of digital serial sections of early stage human embryos. Features include human fertilization videos, photo micrographs of early-stage embryo development, 2D and 3D digital images using visual stack dissections and a pregnancy calculator.*

“WISER” (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.** *

“Mobile REMM” contains the most up-to-date information available for the medical management of radiation emergencies. Included is a dose estimator for exposure, a list of emergency contacts, isotopes of interest and triage guidelines.**

“AIDSinfo HIV/AIDS Glossary” contains more than 850 pertinent HIV/AIDS glossary terms in both English and Spanish.*

“Reunite” is primarily intended for medical aid and relief workers assisting in family reunification efforts after a disaster, but may also be used by the general public to report missing and/or found people. *

“Health Hotlines” is a directory of organizations with toll-free telephone numbers derived from DIRLINE, the National Library of Medicine’s Directory of Information Resources Online. This database contains descriptions of almost 9,000 biomedical organizations and resources.
