Tech Lunch Session on Wednesday 4/29

April 28, 2015

pizzaYou’ve gone through the pains of completing the research and disseminating the results, but how can you make sure you are fully recognized for the work? Do you like eating pizza? Citing an article is no longer enough to prove impact. Researchers now opt for open access, tweet/like/share on social media, or follow less traditional paths and share raw data. Come to our Tech Lunch Series “Get Credit For Your Research” on Wednesday April 29th in the Norris Medical Library East Conference Room and learn to share not just what research you’ve completed but demonstrate the impact your work has had in the field. We’ll discuss:

  • creating a unique researcher ID
  • tracking how often your work is cited
  • using altmetrics
  • identifying data repositories

We’ll also have pizza and bottled water that is sure to have a positive impact on your hunger!

Denim Day in LA! 4/29/2015

April 22, 2015

Denim_Day_in_LAThis year’s Denim Day, a Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Campaign, will be on Wednesday, April 29th, 2015. If you’re interested in participating all you need to do is wear jeans on April 29th! Here’s the story of Denim Day from http://denimdayinfo.org

The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim… Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. In this rape prevention education campaign we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

For more information about Denim Day, go to: http://www.peaceoverviolence.org/

If you’re like some of us, you wear denim all the time, so Norris Medical Library will provide buttons to help you show your support! Get yours at the reference desk on Wednesday, April 29th.

If you’re on social media, you can use the #DenimDay hashtag or, prior to Denim Day, the #GearUp4DenimDay hashtag.

You can also be in our group photo! On Denim Day at 11:45 a.m. we’ll have a group photo shoot outside of the library on Pappas Quad. Bring your denim and bring your support!
